Position:  Volunteer Coordinator

Objective:  Recruit, maintain and supervise adequate numbers of diverse volunteers necessary to ensure daily, on-site coverage for Center’s programs and activities.

Expectations: Work 15 hours a week, with sufficient hours on-site to supervise and support the volunteers in their activities, and with outreach to the community (local churches, colleges, service groups, etc.) to recruit appropriate community members to help provide effective services for homeless women and children.  Reports to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1)Recruitment:  Develop and implement strategies for volunteer recruitment of women from diverse backgrounds.  Generate informational materials to appropriate area-wide agencies, businesses, associations, schools, etc.

2)Training, Support, Evaluation:  Help prepare accurate volunteer descriptions and work agreements to be reviewed and signed by incoming volunteers. Organize and facilitate a volunteer training for new volunteers.  Oversee and maintain volunteer/staff schedule to ensure minimum coverage of two volunteers per shift.  Actively provide volunteers with feedback, acknowledgement and guidance. Ensure transmission of volunteer concerns to other staff, enhancing and promoting effective team work.

3)Newsletter and Meetings:  Organize regular volunteer meetings, contributing to the agenda and facilitating the meetings.  Attend the weekly program committee meetings, representing volunteer concerns and scheduling needs.

4)On-site Services: Assist with providing hospitality, information and referral to clients as necessary.  Assist other staff in assuring maintenance of safe and clean program site.


Degree in mental health / social welfare or comparable work experience as a volunteer coordinator or 2 years experience as a volunteer in comparable organization.  Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with mental disability, substance abuse, domestic violence.  Emotional maturity, sense of humor, capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.  Good communication skills, both oral and written.  Capacity and energy to assist with program growth.  Reliable transportation required with valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Salary and Benefits:  15-20 hour a week position; $16.81 an hour
